Hon. Tyler S. Shandro, K.C.
Tyler has a broad practice area and is a former Cabinet Minister in the Government of Alberta. His practice focuses on areas of public law, including municipal, environmental, indigenous and development law. He also consults on areas of pharmaceutical policy, and he acts for and provides advice to clients who are involved in the health care sector.
During his time as an elected official, he oversaw the response to the COVID-19 pandemic as the Minister of Health, led the redesign of the continuing care sector through the Continuing Care Act and the Facility-base Continuing Care Review, and passed 12 bills to reform the health care system in Alberta. He also, as Solicitor General, led the modernization of the Police Act creating oversight over RCMP conduct and expanding the role of ASIRT, and signed an historic agreement with the Siksika Nation to establish a self-administered police service. As Justice Minister he renamed the Provincial Court to the Alberta Court of Justice, increased the Court’s jurisdiction, increased the size of the Court by seven positions, and expanded the use of Justices of the Peace, among many other reforms.
Tyler has sat on as a member of a number of tribunals and commissions, including the Municipal Government Board, the National Parole Board, and the Calgary Police Commission.
Tyler and his wife, Andrea, have two young sons, which means they spend a lot of evenings and weekends at Calgary’s various hockey rinks.
